- Turriff and District CAB developed from an earlier, independent advice service established in 1990. A local woman, Marie Carnie realised that there was a need for independent and impartial advice and information in the town and surrounding area and set up a steering group to start T.R.A.I.C.E. (Turriff Resource, Advice and Information Exchange). The Centre opened its doors in 1990, funded by an on-site charity shop and small Council grant. At that time, CAS had an affiliate scheme which meant that independent advice agencies could affiliate to Citizens Advice Scotland and use their information system. Centres were subject to CAS’ stringent audit procedures which ensured quality of advice.
- When CAS ended the affiliate scheme, the future of the centre was uncertain. A merger with Peterhead CAB was proposed, however the Committee decided that they wanted the centre to remain locally managed and to remain independent.
- Over the years, the numbers of people using the service increased, the centre shortened its name to Turriff Advice Centre and eventually moved towards becoming a CAB.
